Shibiliang Fm
Type Locality and Naming
Kumkoi Basin, SE corner Xinjiang. The type section is located at the Shibiliang (=Hongshiliang) (E89°02′, N37°20′), southwest of the Ayakkum Lake in the Kumkol Basin, Ruoqiang County, Xinjiang. It was first used by the Altun Joint Survey Team of the Xinjiang Petroleum Management Bureau and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps in 1965 in their unpublished manuscript. Later, it was formally erected by the Regional Stratigraphic Chart Editorial Group of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (RSCEGXUAR) (1981).
Synonym: Gao et al. (2014b) treated the Hongshiliang Fm as a synonym of the Shibiliang Fm.
Lithology and Thickness
The bottom is formed by red sandstones interbedded with brownish-red conglomerates, with interlayers of mudstones and marlstones. Lower part consists of grey and greyish-black sandstones interbedded with conglomerates, with interlayers of red mudstones. Upper part is characterized by the brownish-red muddy siltstones interbedded with siltstones and fine sandstones, which gradually change into the coarse sandstones with gravels. It contains ostracod and gastropod fossils, which are deposited in the lacustrine deposits. Its thickness is in range of 1100~2580 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
In the type section, the Shibiliang Fm conformably contacts with the underlying Miocene Shimagou Fm.
Upper contact
In the type section, the Shibiliang Fm unconformably contacts with the overlying Pliocene Hongliang Fm.
Regional extent
The formation is restricted in the Kumkol Basin.
